The 50 Most Interesting Companies In Bitcoin's History: 26/50

Tether / Bitfinex

Founded by JL van der Velde, Phil Potter, Giancarlo Devasini 2014 · Stablecoins & Payments · Active
The Idea: Bitfinex launched in December 2012 as a bitcoin exchange. Tether followed in July 2014 as Realcoin, renamed Tether that November: a token pegged to the U.S. dollar. The original vision was a 'real-time settlement system' for Bitcoin, but Tether became the dominant dollar-backed stablecoin.
Early Traction: In the early years, Tether provided exchanges with dollar deposits, and banking relationships. As a result, Tether became the lubricant of the entire ecosystem.
Peak Stats: USDT now has a market cap exceeding $100B and dominates the stablecoin category by volume. One of the most-transacted assets in the world. Bitfinex routinely in top 5 exchanges by volume.
Status Today: Active but perpetually controversial. Tether has never undergone a comprehensive, independent audit. Multiple banking crises (losing access to Taiwanese bank relationships in 2021, etc.). The company claims to be fully backed by USD reserves, but this remains unverified. Massive ongoing regulatory pressure globally.
Why It Matters:

Tether is the most important and most controversial company in crypto. USDT is the trading pair for most digital assets and the primary dollar rail for offshore exchanges, which makes its reserves a systemic question for the entire market.
