The 50 Most Interesting Companies In Bitcoin's History: 17/50

Digital Currency Group / Grayscale

Founded by Barry Silbert 2013 · Asset Management · Active
The Idea: A holding company and venture investor for the Bitcoin/crypto ecosystem. This spawned the creator of the first regulated, publicly traded Bitcoin investment vehicle (GBTC). Grayscale, its flagship subsidiary, launched the Bitcoin Investment Trust in September 2013. Also operates Foundry USA Pool, a U.S.-based mining pool launched in 2020 and now the largest in the world. Grayscale's Bitcoin Investment Trust dates to 2013 under SecondMarket; Barry Silbert launched Digital Currency Group as the holding company in 2015.
Peak Stats: Over 160 portfolio companies. GBTC held 650,000+ BTC (~3.5% of all Bitcoin). Grayscale AUM exceeded $40B. DCG portfolio includes early investments in Coinbase, Kraken, Circle, Chainalysis, BitPay, and Ripple. Foundry USA Pool controls ~30% of global Bitcoin hashrate, the largest mining pool in the world.
Status Today: Active, though scarred by the collapse of subsidiary Genesis Trading in 2023 (FTX/Alameda contagion). Silbert resigned as Grayscale chairman in December 2023. In January 2024, GBTC was converted to a spot Bitcoin ETF. Grayscale's SEC lawsuit (which it won) forced the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs for BlackRock, Fidelity, and others. Foundry USA Pool remains the largest mining pool.
Why It Matters:

Grayscale helped create the institutional Bitcoin market, although the discount on GBTC and Genesis rehypothecation scarred the reputation in the FTX fallout. Foundry's rise to the world's largest mining pool after China's mining ban, represents one of the most dramatic power shifts in Bitcoin's history.
