The 50 Most Interesting Companies In Bitcoin's History: 14/50

Canaan Creative

Founded by N.G. Zhang (Zhang Nangeng, a Beihang University PhD student who dropped out to build mining chips) 2013 · Mining Hardware · Active
The Idea: Turn Bitcoin mining from hobbyist GPUs into purpose-built silicon. Zhang's Avalon project shipped the first working Bitcoin ASIC miner in January 2013, beating the vaporware competitors of the era and formally incorporating as Canaan Creative in Hangzhou that year. The bet was that whoever controlled the most efficient SHA-256 chip would control the economics of mining.
Early Traction: The Avalon1 was the first consumer Bitcoin ASIC ever delivered, and early units famously paid for themselves in days. Canaan also open-sourced early chip designs, seeding much of the Chinese ASIC industry that followed, and grew into one of the top mining hardware makers alongside Bitmain and MicroBT.
Peak Stats: Roughly 22% of global mining machine market share at the time of its November 2019 Nasdaq IPO (ticker CAN), which raised about $90 million and made Canaan the first major Bitcoin company, and first Chinese blockchain company, listed on a US exchange. Revenue reached $269.3 million in 2024, and together Bitmain, MicroBT, and Canaan still control roughly 95%+ of the ASIC market.
Status Today: Active. Still public on Nasdaq but a distant third behind Bitmain (80%+ share) and MicroBT. In June 2025 Canaan shut down its Kendryte AI chip unit, which produced just $0.9 million of 2024 revenue while eating 15% of operating costs, to refocus entirely on Bitcoin. It now ships the Avalon A16 series, runs a growing self-mining business, and has completed pilot ASIC production in the US to serve the North American market.
Why It Matters:

Canaan started the ASIC arms race that professionalized mining and secured the network with specialized hardware. Its 2019 Nasdaq listing proved a pure-play Bitcoin company could pass US public market scrutiny, opening the door for the wave of miners and Bitcoin firms that listed after it.
